Mapplethorpe in Milan as the beauty of desire made form
Carles Toribio  milan - 27/04/26

Milan is hosting one of the most anticipated exhibitions of 2026: Robert Mapplethorpe. The Forms of Desire , a comprehensive and unprecedented selection of works that spans the most iconic, powerful, and provocative production of the celebrated American photographer. The exhibition will be on display at the Palazzo Reale from January 29 to May 17, 2026, as part of the cultural program associated with the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games.

Curated by Denis Curti, the exhibition represents the second chapter of a trilogy dedicated to the artist. This exhibition project began in Venice, at Le Stanze della Fotografia, and will culminate in Rome, offering a different interpretation of Mapplethorpe's creative universe at each stage.

This time, the exhibition focuses on his aesthetic research, especially his celebrated nudes: images of restrained sensuality that stand out for their formal perfection. Inspired by an almost classical idealization of the body, these works evoke a sculptural tension reminiscent of the Greek tradition, where musculature and composition achieve near-absolute harmony.

Born in New York in 1946 and dying prematurely in Boston at the age of 42, Mapplethorpe was a key figure in the American counterculture between the 1960s and 1980s. In a period marked by profound social transformations, his work became a political and artistic statement that challenged conventions and explored new forms of identity and freedom.

Through a masterful use of light and contrast, the photographer constructed a unique visual language in which the human body is transformed into an object of aesthetic, spiritual, and symbolic contemplation. His portraits, still lifes, and especially his nudes, seek a visual purity that balances tension and discipline, eroticism and formal rigor.

The Milanese exhibition highlights how her work transcends mere provocation to become a profound reflection on beauty and desire. In it, the body is not only matter, but a form of artistic expression that engages with classical tradition and contemporary sensibilities.

As a complement to the exhibition, two resources for further exploration are presented: the podcast Mapplethorpe Unframed , written and hosted by Nicolas Ballario and available on digital platforms, and a catalogue published by Marsilio Arte. The latter brings together 257 works and offers a comprehensive visual and critical essay analyzing the evolution of the artist's language.
