Illustrator Jesús Cisneros has been awarded the 2026 National Illustration Prize, one of the most prestigious awards in the Spanish art and publishing world. Granted by the Ministry of Culture and endowed with 30,000 euros, the prize recognizes the career of an artist whose work has left a profound mark on contemporary illustration.

The jury, chaired by María José Gálvez Salvador, Director General of Books, Comics, and Reading, highlighted the exceptional quality of an artistic production characterized by expressive intensity and the harmony between visual power, sensitivity, and narrative skill. According to the jury's decision, Cisneros has developed a unique language that, through multiple techniques and graphic resources, manages to construct universes imbued with humanity and emotion.

The review also highlights her ability to create serene and evocative atmospheres, where the gestures of the figures and the symbolic power of the forms invite the viewer to enter almost magical settings. Her work recovers elements of folk tradition and reinterprets them with a contemporary, spontaneous, and profoundly communicative approach.

Born in Zaragoza 59 years ago, Jesús Cisneros studied Art History and Illustration in his hometown. Although drawing was a part of his life from childhood, he spent years working in graphic design before dedicating himself fully to illustration. That decision marked the beginning of an artistic career that has made him an international figure.

Since then, he has published over thirty titles for children, teenagers, and adults, as well as experimental projects and art books. His work has also appeared on book covers, in anthologies, and in editorial collaborations in both Europe and Latin America.

The international reach of her work is reflected in exhibitions held in Spain, France, Portugal, Italy, Mexico, Korea, Turkey, and Ukraine. Furthermore, her illustrations have been selected for prominent industry events, including the Ilustrarte Biennial in Lisbon and the official illustrators' exhibition at the Bologna Children's Book Fair, two of the most important events on the global illustration scene.

Throughout her career, Cisneros has accumulated significant recognition. Among these is her appointment as Ospite d'Onore at the Mostra Internazionale per l'Infanzia Le Immagini della Fantasia in Sàrmede, Italy, in 2025. She also received a special mention at the Ilustrarte Biennial in Lisbon for her work Kintaró in 2018, solidifying a career marked by prestige and constant artistic exploration.

Beyond graphic design, the illustrator has dedicated himself to teaching and collaborating with cultural institutions, businesses, and independent groups. His influence extends to new generations of artists who find in his work a source of inspiration and a demonstration of how illustration can become a universal language.

With this recognition, Jesús Cisneros joins a list of essential figures in contemporary Spanish illustration, including Violeta Lópiz, Sergio García Sánchez, Sonia Pulido, Luci Gutiérrez, Pep Monserrat and Paco Giménez.
