The Government of the Generalitat of Catalonia has declared MORERA, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Lleida, as a museum of national interest, a recognition that highlights both its historical trajectory and the relevance of its heritage. With more than a hundred years of history, MORERA has consolidated itself as an essential institution within the Catalan cultural panorama.
This distinction responds not only to the museum's antiquity, but also to the uniqueness and quality of its collection, considered the most important publicly owned in the field of modern and contemporary art in Catalonia. With nearly 6,000 registered works, the museum offers a broad range that encompasses disciplines such as painting, sculpture, drawing, graphic arts, comics, photography, as well as installations and new visual languages.
Beyond its exhibition function, MORERA plays a fundamental role in the research, conservation and dissemination of contemporary art, especially in the context of Ponent. Its activity contributes to strengthening the cultural fabric of the territory and projecting it towards a national and international framework.
The richness of its heritage is expanded by the deposits of the National Collections of the Generalitat —in areas such as photography, contemporary art, post-war and second avant-gardes, as well as comics and illustration—, in addition to the collection of the Private Foundation of the Association of Visual Artists of Catalonia. This set configures a diverse artistic ecosystem that goes beyond the local area and positions MORERA as a first-rate cultural reference.
