'Bodies that talk': a century-long journey through the female body in comics

The Torre Balldovina Museum in Santa Coloma de Gramenet presents the exhibition Bodies that Talk. Representations of the body in female comic book authors. 1910-2022 , a proposal that invites us to reflect on the evolution of the image of the female body in the world of comics over the course of more than a century.

The exhibition, which opens on Tuesday, April 14 at 7 p.m. with a guided tour by curator Marika Vila, brings together the work of around forty authors, illustrators and puppeteers. Through their works, it can be observed how the representation of women has been conditioned by patriarchal stereotypes, often turning the female body into a visual and commercial resource.

Over time, however, this narrative has changed. The exhibition covers different historical contexts—from the first half of the 20th century to the present day—and shows how female authors have gradually gained space to express their own, freer and more diverse perspectives, especially from the end of the 20th century and the start of the new millennium.

After having toured various facilities of the Local Museums Network between 2024 and 2025, with more than eleven thousand visitors, the version that now arrives in Santa Coloma presents a reduced selection of works in facsimile, while maintaining original pieces in the display cases. The proposal has been promoted by the Cultural Heritage Office of the Barcelona Provincial Council and the Palau Mercader Museum in Cornellà.

The exhibition can be visited until June 28 and is accompanied by a program of complementary activities, such as guided visits with the curator (April 14 and 26 and June 11) and comic workshops by illustrator Raquel Gu (May 10 and 17), which seek to bring the public closer to the language of comics from a creative and participatory perspective.
