The Museu de la Garrotxa, in Olot, is hosting a new exhibition dedicated entirely to the work of RCR Arquitectes. Entitled Roots and Wings. A Journey from the Beginnings to the Present , the exhibition can be visited from March 13 to August 9 and is curated by Jaume Prat Ortells. It is the first major exhibition focused exclusively on the studio's trajectory in its home city.

The exhibition proposal presents a journey that goes from RCR's first projects in Olot to his most recent works of international scope. The story highlights a way of understanding architecture that transcends the construction of buildings to become an experience that integrates territory, culture and art.

In dialogue with the museum's permanent collection, the exhibition contextualizes the studio's production within the cultural fabric of Olot. The tour establishes bridges with the local artistic tradition, with the city's industrial heritage and with the cultural movements that have shaped the identity of this volcanic territory. In this way, the exhibition not only reviews a singular professional trajectory, but also outlines the creative ecosystem from which it emerges.

Beyond a strictly chronological narrative, Arrels i ales emphasizes the way RCR understands architecture: a practice capable of integrating landscape, memory and contemporaneity. The exhibition thus proposes a reading of architecture as a living process in constant transformation, which starts from a very specific local context, but which dialogues with other geographies and cultures.

The tour includes models, drawings, photographs, design pieces and original materials that allow us to understand the conceptual and formal evolution of the studio. It also presents recent projects and research initiatives linked to its creative ecosystem. Among the materials on display are sketches, handwritten reflections and photographs of the authors who have documented their work over the years, witnesses to an open and experimental creative process.

The exhibition is also conceived as a dynamic experience. The program of guided tours and complementary activities reinforces the idea that architecture is a process in motion: it is not a closed work, but a trajectory that continues to evolve.

  • Sants station and its surroundings, in Barcelona, RCR architects.

Founded in 1988 by Rafael Aranda, Carme Pigem and Ramon Vilalta, the RCR studio has developed an architecture deeply rooted in the volcanic landscape of La Garrotxa and the cultural context of Olot. Over the decades, this local perspective has been strongly projected onto the international scene. The recognition with the Pritzker Prize in 2017 definitively consolidated its global projection, without breaking the link with the territory that has fueled its way of thinking and building architecture.

With Arrels i ales , the Museu de la Garrotxa offers a unique opportunity to delve into the universe of one of the most influential studios in contemporary architecture, exploring how ideas capable of dialogue with the world can emerge from a specific landscape.

“The exhibition is divided into three parts: RCR architects, beginnings occupies Open Room 2, and explains the formation of this way of understanding architecture. The studio's first interventions explore inhabitation - a house, a public space - as a fact that transcends the instinct of protection to take root in a place. To inhabit is to ask ourselves what kind of life we want to lead. RCR architects begin their career by considering this question from scratch, providing innovative solutions, looking for spaces that, from the beginning, shape the consciousness of those who live in them, touching this inhabitant through the atmospheres that their interventions generate”, Jaume Prat Ortells.
