Video art takes over TEOR/éTica within the La Melcocha cycle

The Melcocha Central American video art series takes center stage until August 1st as part of the Costa Rica International Film Festival (CRFIC). A new space dedicated to video art is inaugurated, with the aim of actively and visibly incorporating it into the current panorama of audiovisual creation. This proposal arises from the desire to highlight an art form that questions the conventional boundaries of cinema and expands its possibilities in narrative, aesthetic, and political terms.

Curated by Kevin Perez, Paula Piedra, Sergio Rojas Chaves and Viviana Zuniga Ramirez, the exhibits will include Jorge Alban, Andres Carranza, Rocio Con, Habacuc, Jose Alberto Hernandez, Juan Carlos Jimenez, Priscilla Monge, Joaquin Rodriguez del Paso, Karla Solano, Cinthya Soto, Jurgen Ureña, Paulina Velazquez and Manuel Zumbado.

The TEOR/éTica space in San José, Costa Rica, presents a selection of video art works from the 1990s and early 2000s that make up the MADC Video Art Collection and the Archivo del Lado V - TEOR/éTica Study and Documentation Center. This collection aims to present, in a non-exhaustive manner, a part of the history of video art in Costa Rica through representative works that capture the ways of seeing and narrating different realities of our context with moving images, using the available technologies or "new media" of that time.

The artists present seek to contribute to a broad conversation about the audiovisual world in a constantly evolving field that brings together different elements and concepts. Along with the projections, the exhibition displays a collection of archival materials—photographs, catalogs, documents, and other vestiges—that invite us to delve into the universe of each work. These fragments of the creative process and its transition through different spaces and perspectives allow the viewer to intertwine past and present, gesture and context, broadening the resonance and interpretation of each piece.

The TEOR/éTica space in San José made headlines in May when Paula Piedra Mora was appointed as the space's new director, pursuing two essential lines of present and future: art and thought.
