When art becomes a tapestry: Miró and Royo at the Mas Miró Foundation
bonart mont-roig del camp - 28/06/25

Joan Miró and Josep Royo met around the beginning of the 1970s, when the former became fully immersed in textile work upon meeting the latter. The two would create collaborations based on monumental tapestries, such as the Tapes of the Joan Miró Foundation and the UNESCO Tapes, both created in 1970.

The Mas Miró Foundation in Mont-roig del Camp explores this relationship with Joan Miró and Josep Royo in the form of an exhibition. Tapestries will be on view from June 28 to December 15. This artistic collaboration saw Miró design the sketch or cardboard, and Royo execute the technical execution of the tapestry, integrating Miró's visual vision with textile craftsmanship.

The tapestry collection created by Josep Royo in 1989, inspired by the works of Joan Miró, once again brings Miró's figure closer to the town of Mont-roig del Camp. A space that was key to the artist and the creation of iconic works such as La Masía, Mont-rojo, and the Church of Mont-rojo, where Miró drew inspiration from the landscape of the municipality in the province of Tarragona.

This new exhibition at the Mas Miró Foundation is complemented by the opportunity to view Pere Portabella's 1973 documentary, "Miró Tapís." A film shot in six days at Mas Miró in Tarragona, where Josep Royo created an original Joan Miró tapestry. The 22-minute documentary features a 6 x 11 meter tapestry weighing a total of 3,500 kilograms, with 1,200 kilograms of wool and 600 kilograms of weft. It was commissioned for the 1974 Miró exhibition at the Grand Palais in Paris.
