Joan Miró and Josep Royo met around the beginning of the 1970s, a time when the former fully immersed himself in textile work upon meeting the latter. Both would create collaborations based on monumental tapestries such as the Tapis de la Fundació Joan Miró or the Tapis de la UNESCO, both created in 1970.
The Mas Miró Foundation in Mont-roig del Camp explores this relationship with Joan Miró / Josep Royo in the form of an exhibition. Tapestries that can be seen from June 28 to December 15. An artistic collaboration where Miró designed the sketch or cardboard, to make the creation Royo executing the technical realization of the tapestry, integrating Miró's plastic vision with textile mastery.
The tapestry collection created by Josep Royo in 1989, inspired by works by Joan Miró, once again brings the figure of Miró closer to the town of Mont-roig del Camp. A space that was key for the artist and the creation of iconic works such as La Masia, Mont-roig, or Església de Mont-roig, where Miró was inspired by the landscape of the municipality in the province of Tarragona.
This new exhibition by the Mas Miró Foundation is complemented by the possibility of viewing the documentary Miró Tapís by Pere Portabella from 1973. A film that was shot in six days at Mas Miró and in Tarragona where Josep Royo created an original tapestry by Joan Miró. A 22-minute documentary and a tapestry measuring 6 x 11 meters with a total weight of 3,500 kilograms with 1,200 kilograms of wool and six hundred of weft. It was a commission for Miró's exhibition at the Grand Palais in Paris in 1974.
