A new series of Interim Works is launching at the Cerralbo Museum under the title "Cerrabo and the Collectors." The first piece is the portrait of Leocadia Zamora y Quesada, a work by Luis de Madrazo y Kunt. The selected piece will be exhibited at the Summer Reception, joining the previous series starting in 2023: Contemporaries in the Palace and Beyond Cerralbo.

Luis de Madrazo y Kunt, son of José de Madrazo, was commissioned to paint the portrait of Leocadia Zamora y Quesada, on display from May 13 to September 7. The artist was a prominent 19th-century Spanish portrait painter. This new project explores contemporary female collectors, contemporary with the Cerralbo and Villa-Huertas families.

Portrait of Leocadia Zamora y Quesada

Leocadia was an aristocrat and prominent social figure during the reign of Isabella II of Spain. Her portrait, created at the time by Federico de Madrazo, cemented her reputation as "the most beautiful woman in Isabella II's Spain." It is now on display in this new project, focusing on portraits of Spanish women by Spanish artists prior to 1850.

A striking composition features various elements, such as the elegant white evening dress, typical of high society at the time, combined with the bright blue shawl, which highlights the blue color of the composition with great naturalness, color, and depth. Another highlight is the subject's updo, in keeping with the fashion of the time. There is a refined use of light and color, combined with the architectural and natural backgrounds on the right side of the composition.

This new work joins previously exhibited works by artists such as Joaquín Sorolla, María Blanchard, Frans Snyders, Mariano Salvador Maella, and Antonio María Esquivel. This new interpretation and approach to collecting is being introduced, establishing new collaborations between institutions.
