The large-format paintings of Gustavo Torner's mature stage are in full force at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in the city of Madrid. An exhibition curated by Arturo Sagastibeza focuses all interest on the period of great creations that the artist painted between 1977 and 2008.

Almost all of the works exhibited at the RABASF are from private collections and many of them unpublished, with an important one from the Torner Foundation of Cuenca. Gustavo Torner was a versatile and classic artist and the Royal Academy pays tribute with thirteen works highlighting his legacy and influence within Spanish abstract art.

A small exhibition tour with large works explains the curator, an exhibition that can be visited until July 27, when Gustavo Torner would have turned one hundred years old. The works explain themselves and are a synthesis of cultures, civilizations and times that characterized the work of the Spanish artist. It is a testimony to the density and richness of a splendid moment in his painting.

Gustavo Torner is a key figure of the second abstract generation or generation of the 1950s, with a diverse and eclectic body of work. These exhibited paintings are synonymous with the enthusiasm and vitality of a second youth, but full of maturity, mastery of technique, as well as the wisdom of a consummate artist in the artistic scene.

A multidisciplinary artist who marked the history of Spanish art. Engineer by training and artist by vocation, Torner is an essential figure for understanding the development of abstract art in Spain. Linked to the so-called 'lyrical line' of informalism —more rational and structured than the expressionist El Pas group—, his career spans more than eight decades of artistic production that transcends the traditional limits of painting.

The viewer's gaze will transport them to an enormous visual impact, with powerful pieces of physical presence and significant dimensions. It is also necessary to stop at the variety of Colors, irregular formats, compositional complexity and panels that are made individually, but end up coming together to create the polyptychs that characterize Gustavo Torner's work.

The centenary of Gustavo Torner will also be celebrated in Cuenca, the artist's hometown and one of the main artists along with Fernando Zóbel and Gerardo Rueda. As a complement to the exhibition that can be enjoyed at the Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, one has been created simultaneously at the Torner Foundation in Cuenca.
