One of the most prominent figures in the world's contemporary art scene lands in Bilbao with the spectacular exhibition My House is your House. Chiharu Shiota has created this tour in the form of a monographic exhibition at the Azkuna Zentroa - Alhóndiga Bilbao and it is the first exhibition in the Basque Country by the artist from Osaka, Japan.
Known for her monumental installations woven with wool, also with other fabrics, otherwise for her interventions with space, a framework that invites dialogue with a new poetic and dreamlike world. The other characteristic element of the Japanese artist is the use of everyday objects within artistic creation imagining those memories that have possibly been engraved in the memory.
Feelings, fascination, disgust, repulsion, security or fears are elements that viewers encounter in front of Chiharu Shiota's work. Memories of the past, without forgetting time, movement, dream or memory, along with a journey to a dreamlike place, influenced by artists such as Marina Abramovic or Christian Boltanski.

Curated by Tereza de Arruda, the exhibition at Azkuna Zentroa - Alhóndiga Bilbao, the City Council's Centre for Contemporary Society and Culture, the red colour and the monumental staircase connect with the atrium of the exhibition hall, in a journey that will go from its beginnings to the latest installations never exhibited. The concept of house/house extends to the domestic sphere of public space in a constant dialogue with the architecture of the space.
Nire etxea zurea ere bada (My House is Your House) begins in the atrium and is composed of thirteen monumental red dresses that represent absent beings as existence, exchange or preservation of ephemeral memories. Shiota's installations weave intricate thread patterns that reference both traditional weaving and oriental calligraphy. The threads create a complex and expanded drawing that has no clear beginning or end, symbolizing paths, stories and experiences.

Chiharu Shiota's exhibition opens on May 27 and will run until September 28. My House is your House is part of Prototipoak Bilbao, the International Biennial of artistic practices that is held from May 27 to 31 at the Azkuna Zentroa - Alhóndiga Bilbao. A proposal that works as a meeting point for artists with different perspectives, from different places who question reality with the opening of artistic practices to influence them.
