Volaverunt: Goya revisited by the contemporary eye

Volaverunt. Goya's engravings from the contemporary period arrive at the Sant Cugat Monastery Museum with the aim of inviting us to look at Goya from today, without losing the context from which his work emerged. Until September 14, you can see the four major series of engravings that Goya created between 1797 and 1819: Caprichos, Desastres de la guerra, Tauromaquia and Proverbs (Nonsense). The prints are part of the collection of the Mataró Museum and correspond to an edition made at the Calcografía Nacional in Madrid during the Spanish Civil War, especially valued for the quality of its printing.

The proposal, curated by Aina Mercader Sbert , is based on the fact that one piece is missing from the collection, engraving number 16 of Desastres de la guerra, entitled Se aprovechan. It is not known whether its absence is the result of an accident or a decision. In any case, this lack serves as a starting point to rethink Goya's work and open up new paths of interpretation. The exhibition also incorporates contemporary works created especially for this project. Irene Solà , Anna Dot , Marcos Prior and the Compañía La Soledad (formed by Marc Caellas and Esteban Feune de Colombi ) propose interventions that do not seek to explain Goya but rather to connect with him from current perspectives. Each proposal opens up a different approach to themes that, despite the passage of time, remain valid.

Organized by the Mataró Museum, Volaverunt premiered in 2021 at Ca l'Arenas Art Center. Now, thanks to the Network of History and Monument Museums of Catalonia, it comes to Sant Cugat to continue exploring the relevance of an artist who rawly captured his era and who continues to challenge us.
