The Spotlight: young photographers from Barcelona arrive in Washington
An initiative by Foto Colectania to expand the dissemination of photography and visual culture internationally.
The works of eight young photographers selected for the 2024 edition of El Projector , an initiative of the Foto Colectania Foundation that, for fifteen years, has become a springboard for emerging talent from Barcelona's photography schools, make a transatlantic leap to be exhibited on the exterior facade of the Cultural Center of the Embassy of Spain in Washington, D.C.
This installation, which will premiere on April 7, 2025 under the name The Spotlight and will be on view for a whole year, not only represents an open window to the work of new generations, but also strengthens the connection between state photography and the North American public. Pepe Font de Mora , director of Foto Colectania, highlights that this step represents an impetus for the internationalization of emerging creators and reaffirms photography as a strong tool of cultural expression.

The Projector has been gaining momentum since its birth in 2010. Each year, the photography schools that are part of the Foto Colectania Friendly Schools program select students with outstanding projects, and of these, the foundation chooses one per school to be a finalist. The 2024 selection includes names such as Andrés Bustamante (FD, Fotodesign School Barcelona), Irma Collín (Instituto 8), Rosa Franco Mendoza (IEFC), Aitana García (Serra i Abella School of Art and Design), Marina Giraldos i López (IDEP), Karim Khourrou Gadour (Faculty of Fine Arts of the UB), Gabriel Piñero (LABASAD) and Albert Rocafort (LCI Barcelona). Through their images, we get closer to the diverse styles and approaches of a new generation of visual creators who, through their images and narratives, invite us to experience the world from completely personal artistic perspectives.
This collaboration between Foto Colectania and the Cultural Office of the Embassy in Washington not only projects the creativity of young photographers, but also contributes to strengthening the links between cultural and educational institutions in both countries.
