Joan Miró: poetry into painting

The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum (TMAM) presents Joan Miró. Poetry into Painting, a major retrospective that pays tribute to the Catalan artist as part of the 50th anniversary of the Fundació Joan Miró . This exhibition offers a complete view of his career, from the first works created in Barcelona to the last pieces of his career, including the avant-garde period in Paris and the influences gathered during his stays in the United States and Japan. This is the first major anthological exhibition of Joan Miró in Japan since the exhibition presented by the national museums of modern art in Tokyo and Kyoto in 1966, an exhibition that motivated the Catalan artist's first visit to the country.

The result of a collaboration between the Fundació Joan Miró and TMAM, with production by The Asahi Shimbun Company , the exhibition brings together nearly one hundred works that reflect his artistic evolution. With an outstanding selection of paintings, sculptures, textiles, objects and posters, the show features pieces from the Fundació Joan Miró collection, as well as loans from institutions and private collections. Among the most relevant works are Composition avec personnages dans la forêt incendiée, which was already exhibited in Japan in 1932, and Personatge taent del sol, which is being presented outside Barcelona for the first time in four decades.

The Japanese public, who have always had a strong connection to Miró's symbolic universe, will enjoy this opportunity to explore his work, characterized by the use of elements such as the sun, the moon and the stars. Forty years after his death, his legacy continues to be reviewed and studied around the world. The exhibition also includes the famous Constellations series and allows us to rediscover the creative genius of an artist who created and innovated until his last years.
