Making a collection: the art collection of the Mataró Museum
bonart mataró - 28/02/25

The Museu de Mataró presents the exhibition Fer col·lecció. El fonds d'art del Museu de Mataró , 2019-2024 , a show that brings together a selection of the pieces incorporated into its artistic collection over the last five years. The exhibition includes a diverse set of 78 works out of a total of 130 acquired during this period, which represent a variety of styles, formats and techniques, with a chronology that spans from the 19th century to the present day.

The exhibited pieces have been incorporated into the museum's collection with the aim of expanding the representation of local artists and serving as visual testimony to events, characters, ways of life and aesthetic and cultural trends. This selection allows for new dialogues to be established between the works and to connect them with other elements of the museum's collection, enriching their interpretation and historical contextualization.

The exhibition features works by renowned artists such as Jordi Benito , Blanca Casas Brullet , Andrés Galeano , Domènec , Mònica Vilert , Eduard Alcoy , Raul Capitani , Josep M. Codina , Rafael Estrany , Josep Vinardell , Carme Garolera , Nefer , Josep Novellas , Parés de Mataró and Perecoll , among others.

The works have arrived at the Museum through different channels: through the Singulars project, the Torres Garcia painting biennial, donations from artists and individuals, deposits from the National Collection of Contemporary Art of the Generalitat de Catalunya, and direct acquisitions. The historical collection of the Mataró Museum is a benchmark in figurative art from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and these new additions contribute to filling existing gaps and expanding the range of artists represented.

In addition to the display of works, the exhibition offers interviews with some of the artists and collectors who have made donations, which allows us to learn about the creative process and the reasons why they decided to become part of the museum's collection. Educational activities and dynamic visits have also been organized to bring this collection closer to the public and encourage dialogue around art and cultural heritage.
