Since this past Monday, February 17, the world of contemporary art in Barcelona has been mourning the loss of one of its most emblematic figures: the gallerist Maria Rosa Furriol. One of the city's most veteran and influential, she has left us an invaluable legacy in the cultural panorama.
In its early days, Maria Rosa took over the reins of the Eude gallery in Barcelona (located at 278 Consell de Cent Street) when her sister, Fina Furriol, who opened it in 1975, fell ill in 2004. In 2007, Fina died and Maria Rosa decided to continue with the gallery business, although until then she had worked as a Spanish and English teacher. One of the most outstanding moments of her professional career as a gallerist was in 2011, when she received the ACCA Award from the Art Critics Association of Catalonia for the best exhibition, entitled 'Abstract Expressionism: Alechinsky, Appel, Dubuffet, Hartung', in the category of modern art and historical research galleries.
'La botte à nique', Dubuffet (1973)
Since its inception, the Eude gallery has organized temporary exhibitions dedicated to the graphic work and photography of relevant artists both nationally and internationally.
Starting today, Wednesday, February 19, her wake will be held at the Les Corts Funeral Home in Barcelona from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and on Thursday, February 20, Maria Rosa's funeral will be held from 1:00 p.m. at the same funeral home.
In memory of a loyal client and great friend
This past February 17th in the afternoon, Maria Rosa Furriol, one of our most loyal readers and a great friend of our magazine, a true Bonartiana, left us. From the editorial team, we want to express our deepest condolences for this irreparable loss and share our pain with her family, friends and all the people who were lucky enough to know her, especially Carmen, Silvia and Esther, her tireless workers at the Eude gallery.
I remember that I always went to visit them at the gallery and I had a great time with them, chatting, having snacks and laughing with “my girls” or “the golden girls of Consell de Cent”. Above all, I remember the last time she called me this past summer. I was in the garden of my house, sick, and yet, from her residence, where she was being cared for, she only thought about work. She told me that she was happy with how Maria Girona's exhibition, 'Flowers and Birds', had gone, and that she wanted to announce and write about Jaume Plensa's exhibition at her gallery. With her energetic and determined voice, she conveyed a very powerful message to me: those of us in the art world can never give up!
Maria Rosa, with your passion for art and culture you have been an inspiration to a generation of men and women like me. I feel very lucky to have met you and shared this path with you until the end of your days. I will always remember you with great affection and, above all, with great admiration. Your legacy and your enthusiasm for the world of art will always remain present among all of us.
Thank you very much for everything, we will never forget you!
