'Ría' is the first institutional monographic exhibition dedicated to the Mexican artist Jorge Satorre (Mexico City, 1979) in the peninsula. His work is characterized by exploring uncharted stories, whether through the intangible heritage of customs and the transmission of stories, or through traditional production methods. Initially interested in editorial illustration, the artist has evolved towards a sculptural practice that dialogues with the contexts in which he produces and exhibits his work. His career includes solo exhibitions in institutions such as the CRAC Alsace in France, the CarrerasMugica gallery in Bilbao, REDCAT in Los Angeles and the Tamayo Museum in Mexico City. His recent creations involve acts of transformation such as modeling, stamping, forging, melting or breaking materials.
The exhibition, which will open on February 1 and will be open until the end of May, brings together several works produced between 2013 and 2025, a period that Satorre defines as an adjustment of the distance between the forms and references that make up his work. This introspection has led him to question the relationship between personal experience and broader cultural, political or social contexts, making reference between the specific and the general, proximity and distance, interior life and public exposure.
On the occasion of the exhibition, the artist's first monograph will be published, which will include essays by Daniel Garza Usabiaga , director of the Palace of Fine Arts Museum in Mexico City , and by the Irish artist Sean Lynch , as well as a conversation between Satorre and Latitudes , curators of the exhibition.
