The Canals Art Gallery joins the celebration of the Year of Miró, paying tribute to his figure and his contribution to contemporary tapestry. His connection with this discipline, closely linked to the Catalan Tapestry School of Sant Cugat , has its origins in the first collaborations with the artisans of Casa Aymat, a reference center in textile renovation in Catalonia.
As part of the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Fundació Miró in Barcelona, the gallery wanted to relive the moment when Miró created his first tapestry, entitled 'Tarragona', in 1970 in Sant Cugat, with the exhibition 'Miró and the tapestry of Sant Cugat', which will be inaugurated in March. The tapestry, measuring 280 x 400 cm, marked a before and after in textile art, combining textures and knots with the chromaticism so characteristic of the artist. The involvement of figures such as Josep Royo , Pere Cortijos and Carles Delclaux was fundamental for the materialization of this tapestry. Miró became an international reference in this field, with a prolific production that bears his mark along with Royo's. The tapestry 'Fundació', created in 1979 and permanently exhibited at the Fundació Miró in Barcelona, is another example. This monumental piece, measuring 750 x 500 cm, incorporates materials such as jute, hemp fiber, cotton and wool, a whole exploration both material and conceptual.

The exhibition will include photographs by Carles Cabanas (AMSC), which document Miró's visits to Casa Aymat , as well as sketches and engravings by the artist. The celebration of the Miró Year 2025 will also be accompanied by the publication of a book that will collect all the details about this history and an extensive program of activities that will last from March to May 2025. This commemoration reinforces the importance of Sant Cugat as an epicenter of textile renewal and highlights the legacy of one of Catalonia's most universal creators.
