Carles Sala Mitjà. Line of 'cerartists'

The Terracotta Museum of Ceramics claims the legacy of the Bisbalenc Sala family of potters and highlights the role of its last member, Carles Sala Mitjà. At the show, entitled Carles Sala. From potter to ceramic artist , this lineage of Bisbalan ceramics potters is rediscovered and the creative transition of Carles Sala i Mitjà, from traditional potter to ceramic artist, is highlighted. The first area of the exhibition focuses on the lineage of potters of the Sala family, with a history that goes back some 175 years, when the profession was passed down from generation to generation, culminating in Carles Sala i Mitjà , which personifies the sixth generation of potters in the family. It also includes the audiovisual Carles Sala, ceramist. Between tradition and modernity , where an interview with Carles Sala is presented on the occasion of the exhibition.

The exhibition claims the legacy of this workshop and its members, examines the different types of pieces that were produced there, as well as the tools and machines used. In addition, the workshop itself stands out, a work space that still preserves the traditional direct flame oven integrated into the house and all the traditional distribution of its work spaces. The second area of the exhibition is dedicated to Carles Sala i Mitjà. At the beginning of the 1960s, he joined the workshop, maintaining the traditional production of pots and pans. However, in the mid-seventies he left this traditional manufacture to focus on his artistic work.

Carles Sala became a transcendent figure in the modern history of the ceramics of La Bisbal and, by extension, of the whole of Catalonia. He knew how to make the transition from traditional earthenware to author's ceramics considered as objects of art. He continued to work in the familiar space of La Bisbal, but stays abroad (especially in Japan) were a constant throughout his career. These life experiences of personal and technical learning were reflected in his ceramics. He also collaborated with artists from other disciplines such as Modest Cuixart during the 1980s. With an extraordinary and tireless vocation over more than seventy years of experience, Carles Sala continues to demonstrate a strong commitment and dedication to his profession.
