bonart madrid - 21/02/23

From February 22 to 26, the Out of Africa gallery in Madrid will participate in Art Madrid 2023, which is held at the Palau de la Cibeles. For this edition the gallery will present four artists who are: Mederic Turay (Abidjan, Ivory Coast-1979), Remy Samuz (Cotonou, Benin-1982), Oliver Okolo (Suleja, Nigeria-1991) and Megan Gabrielle Harris (Sacramento, USA -1992). According to its director, Sorella Acosta, Contemporary African Art is booming, and its demand is increasing thanks to a relationship of exceptional artists whose aesthetic innovation and conceptual depth have favored this trend. Their works interpret and portray the socio-economic reality of Africa" and adds that "these emerging artists have influenced the evolution of contemporary art in the international arena."

4 artists for Art Madrid

Mederic Turay will present his recent series of works, more abstract and introspective, in which he combines coffee, oil and acrylic brushstrokes and natural pigments in order to create a multisensory experience. For his part, Remy Samuz has brought for this occasion a series of light, transparent and poetic works, which sometimes take the form of enormous characters, with dignified and humble silhouettes that evoke gestures of humanity. His works invite both meditation and reflection. The third participating artist is Oliver Okolo who is a self-taught contemporary artist who takes inspiration from a classic style of Renaissance art pioneers such as Michelangelo and fuses it almost perfectly with a contemporary interpretation and touch through the his representation of African subjects.

Finally, artist Megan Gabrielle Harris, who is an Afro-Surrealist artist, explores how African women like herself navigate and ultimately escape a patriarchal society that subjugates them. Harris uses vibrant and rich color palettes with the aim of creating a light and airy atmosphere for her subjects, while also portraying these female figures as independent and powerful.

It should be remembered that the OOA (Out of Africa) Gallery was founded in 2011 and is located in the heart of Sitges and specializes in contemporary African art presenting international artists. The gallery becomes a unique platform for emerging and established artists to express their respective artistic creations. OOA is now also present in London, which will further its influence and have an impact on the notoriety of its artists. The gallery closed 2022 with 3 sold out shows, increasing its participation in five international fairs and expanding its collaboration with new artists for 2023.
