Caterina Miralles: critical cartographies of the territory in Nicosia

Caterina Miralles: critical cartographies of the territory in Nicosia
bonart nicosia - 23/04/26

In the heart of Nicosia's walled city, a cultural and community initiative, MATCH Project, becomes the stage for an artistic proposal that reflects on the current ecological state of the Mediterranean. Starting April 25th, it opens its doors at Gardens of the Future, a community garden that serves as a living laboratory for sustainability, encounter, and cultural experimentation.

The exhibition, curated within the MATCH (Mediterranean as the Climate Hotspot) residency program, brings together the work of artists Christina Zampoulaki and Caterina Miralles, one of the artists who created the cover of bonart 203. This project proposes an approach to climate change from culture and community action, connecting artistic practices with territorial research and social collaboration.

Far from traditional extractive approaches, the exhibition explores alternative ways of perceiving, mapping, and caring for the land. To this end, it draws on field research conducted in two contrasting landscapes in Cyprus: the community ecosystem of Gardens of the Future and the forested area surrounding the Skouriotissa copper mine.

Within this framework, Barcelona-based artist Caterina Miralles presents Margins of Definition , an audiovisual installation that examines how territory is delimited, controlled, and transformed through systems of mapping, borders, and extractive infrastructures. Her work oscillates between the macro—large-scale interventions on the landscape—and the micro, with detailed records of the soil and its invisible ecologies. As part of her intervention, Miralles has also designed a permanent water collection structure built with repurposed materials, which remains installed in the garden as both a practical and symbolic gesture.

The exhibition was produced by D6:EU, an organization that promotes artistic practices committed to social and environmental justice. Its programs foster exchange between artists, communities, and heritage professionals in Europe, the Middle East, and Cyprus, guided by values of sustainability, equity, and cooperation.

The context surrounding the exhibition is significant. Gardens of the Future, founded by architect Anastasia Christou and a multidisciplinary collective, is situated within a network of restored heritage buildings and hidden courtyards. This space was recognized in 2022 with the New European Bauhaus Award for its innovative community-based approach to sustainability. More than just a garden, it functions as a place of coexistence where diverse communities come together to cultivate, discuss, and rethink ways of life in the face of the climate crisis.
