Carlos Franco: Tauromía

A visual journey to the aesthetic elevation of bullfighting at the Miguel Marcos gallery.

Carlos Franco: Tauromía

Yesterday, the Miguel Marcos Gallery opened its doors to 'Tauromía', a vibrant and profound exhibition in which Carlos Franco , one of the key names in contemporary Spanish art, immerses us in his personal vision of the bullfighting world. This exhibition brings together a selection of works in which the Madrid painter explores bullfighting from a perspective that fuses tradition and modernity, beauty and brutality, all wrapped in a style that is both gestural and poetic.

Carlos Franco, known for his fascination with the human figure, myth and cultural traditions, invites us here to discover bullfighting as we have never seen it before. In 'Tauromía', bullfighting is not just a show; it is an art, a drama in which color and form unfold the intensity of the confrontation between man and bull. Inspired since his childhood by iconic bullfighting figures such as Curro Romero, Franco turns the movement of the bullfighter into a pictorial dance where each stroke has the elegance and risk of a hood movement.

The exhibition takes us to the center of the square, but also to an introspective dimension, in which bullfighting becomes a metaphor for the creative process. In Franco's works, the bull is more than an animal; he is an archetype, a representation of defiance and indomitable passion, while the bullfighter embodies the struggle between reason and instinct, in a precarious balance between art and destruction.

With a palette of intense colors and an energetic brushstroke, Carlos Franco, just as Goya or Picasso did in their time, reinterprets bullfighting and gives it a new meaning: here the limits of the square are diluted to transform into a symbolic and emotional space, where the fight acquires an aesthetic dimension.

It is no coincidence that in 2022 he was commissioned to design the poster for the Corrida Goyesca de Ronda, a recognition of his ability to capture the essence of bullfighting with a contemporary look. Now, in 'Tauromía', Franco resumes this visual pulse between tradition and modernity and takes it even further, showing us bullfighting as a ritual that lives on in the collective memory.
