bonart girona - 16/10/22

On October 7, the Temporada Alta Festival opened at the Teatre Municipal de Girona with the play L'adversari directed by Julio Manrique and performed by Pere Arquillué and Carles Martínez. A show directed by Julio Manrique that explores the magnitude of self-deception and the importance of keeping up appearances. The production is based on the work of the same name by Emmanuel Carrère, which tells the true story of Jean-Claude Romand, who pretended to be a doctor working at the WHO and before his family discovered the lie, decided to murder all of them On the scene, Manrique presents a dialogue between Carrère himself (Pere Arquillué) and Romand (Carles Martínez) through an epistolary relationship that they maintained while the author was writing the book. In addition, Arquillué will take on the shoes of several characters.

Manrique has detailed that in this assembly it will be reconstructed how Romand created and maintained a lie for 18 years. The Frenchman's case came to light in 1993, when he murdered his children, wife, parents and dog. He later tried to commit suicide by burning down the house but failed and ended up hospitalized.

"When he left the hospital everyone knew the truth," explained Manrique. "In just three days" the society discovered that the man had pretended to be a doctor and work as a researcher at the WHO. The moment his lie was about to come to light, the man chose to kill the family rather than admit the deception.

As a result of this case, the writer Emmanuel Carrère became interested in Jean-Claude Romand and ended up writing a book about the case. Now, Manrique - who has declared himself a follower of the author - has decided to bring this play to the theater with a production that bears the same name as the play: 'The adversary'. To do so, he himself has adapted the book together with Cristina Genebat and Marc Artigau.

Manrique has assured that none of the three had a clear "where to start" until they finally saw that "it was a dialogue between the author and the criminal". That's why they chose to choose two actors (Carles Martínez and Pere Arquillué) and use them to revive the atmosphere of Jean-Claude Romand.
