Anthony Caro takes over the new terrace of the Fine Arts Museum in Bilbao
The newly renovated Bilbao Fine Arts Museum is embarking on a new chapter with an expansion that not only increases its facilities but also proposes new ways of relating architecture, the collection, and the public. Designed by British architect Norman Foster and Bilbao native Luis M. Uriarte, the project incorporates new exhibition spaces and a large open-air terrace conceived as an extension of the museum into the city.
The reopening will take place on October 5th, and from the following day, the public can access the renovated spaces, with free admission all week, until October 13th. Two spaces stand out among the new features. First, the atrium, an open, luminous, and high-ceilinged area that connects the different buildings and fosters a dialogue between architecture, works of art, and visitors. Second, the BBK Museoa, an open-plan hall of approximately 1,500 square meters and six meters high, which extends to its north and west sides via a perimeter terrace of more than 500 square meters.
This new outdoor space is conceived as an open-air extension of the exhibition galleries and will have a function specifically linked to sculpture. Its inauguration will feature three monumental works by Anthony Caro, one of the key figures in 20th-century British sculpture. These are Toronto Flats and Low Line Flats , donated to the museum by the Foster family, and Africa , from the Arango Collection.
Caro's presence thus establishes a new relationship between sculpture, architecture, and landscape. The dimensions of the pieces and their location on an open terrace will allow them to be contemplated in direct dialogue with the urban and natural environment surrounding the museum, in an experience distinct from that offered by the interior spaces.
In this sense, the expansion represents an opportunity to rethink how the collection is presented and to establish new connections between periods, artists, and disciplines. The new Museum of Fine Arts expands its physical boundaries, but it also proposes a more permeable conception of the museum, in which architecture ceases to be merely a container and becomes an active part of the artistic experience.
The reopening will also be accompanied by new exhibitions, including Overseas Visions , as well as a tribute to Plácido Arango and the presentation of a thousand works from his collection.
