After seven years of renovations, the National Museum of Art (MUNAL) is reopening its permanent collection of 20th-century Mexican art to the public with a completely revised exhibition. Titled " Art and Visuality in Modern Mexico: MUNAL Collection, 20th Century ," the museum presents a journey that revisits the development of artistic modernity in Mexico between the late 19th and mid-20th centuries.

Far from being a simple reinstallation of the collection, the exhibition offers a new interpretation of one of the most decisive periods in Mexican art. The renewed curatorial approach expands the traditional narrative and incorporates new perspectives that allow for a better understanding of the aesthetic, social, and cultural transformations that marked the birth of modern Mexico.

The exhibition is structured around nine thematic sections, encompassing more than 340 works, including paintings, sculptures, photographs, prints, and historical documents. Many of these pieces are being exhibited for the first time, enriching the exhibition's narrative and offering a broader perspective on the diverse movements that shaped the country's visual arts.

The exhibition brings together works by some of the great names in Mexican art, such as Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, José Clemente Orozco, María Izquierdo, Gerardo Murillo "Dr. Atl", Roberto Montenegro, Tina Modotti, Lola Álvarez Bravo and Lola Cueto, among other fundamental creators who contributed to renewing the national artistic language.

In addition to the best-known works of these artists, the exhibition incorporates documentary and photographic materials that contextualize their creative processes and allow us to understand how art engaged with the profound political, social, and cultural changes that Mexico experienced during the first half of the 20th century.
