The government has approved awarding the Gold Medal of the Generalitat of Catalonia to the illustrator Roser Capdevila and the pharmaceutical entrepreneur and cultural patron Antoni Vila Casas in recognition of their work promoting contemporary Catalan art. By awarding the Gold Medal to Antoni Vila Casas, the Generalitat wants to honor the cultural patron for his commitment to the country and his ability to catalyze the artistic wealth of Catalonia. The creation of a network of museum spaces in various parts of Catalan geography has succeeded in bringing contemporary art closer to the general public.
The Gold Medal of the Generalitat de Catalunya is the highest honorary distinction awarded by the Executive. It was created in 1978 to distinguish those people who have provided eminent and extraordinary services to Catalonia in the political, social, economic, cultural or scientific fields.
This year, the award recognizes the cultural excellence of our country, in its various disciplines, and it does so by awarding two people who have worked tirelessly to vindicate Catalan art here and around the world.
This year's medal ceremony will take place at the beginning of September, as part of the Catalonia Day events.
